Los leones, cuyo nombre científico es Panthera leo o Felis leo (como fue descrito por primera vez por Linneo. Todo esto quiere decir que son vertebrados, mamíferos y carnívoros, aunque esto no debería sorprender a nadie. En la actualidad hay solo cuatro especies del género Panthera: tigres, leones, jaguares y leopardos (que incluye a las verdaderas panteras, que no son más que leopardos con un gen recesivo que les cambia el color. A todos ellos se les considera grandes felinos por su capacidad de rugir. El gigante león cavernario (en la foto un individuo juvenil) fue reproducido muchas veces en las pinturas rupestres. Descripción: los leones tienen dimorfismo sexual, es decir, el macho y la hembra presentan diferencias morfológicas. Los machos tienen un peso es de 180 kg de media aunque puede llegar hasta los 250 kg y las hembras es de 126 kg de media, hasta los 180 kg con una altura de 120 cm hasta la cruz y 100 cm respectivamente y de largo 180 cm los machos y 150 cm las hembras. Los leones son los únicos felinos cuya cola acaba en un mechón de pelos a forma de brocha, que les sale al poco de nacer y se forma hasta las siete semanas. Los machos presentan una melena, única en los felinos, que sirve como medida de l a madurez sexual y la testosterona, además de ser una protección natural durante las peleas territoriales entre machos. Los leones blancos son el resultado de un gen recesivo que les da esa coloración y una melena poco aparente. Ecología y Distribución: Los leones son animales territoriales que se mueven en familias de hembras con un único macho adulto. En la actualidad solo quedan poblaciones salvajes de leones en la sabana del sur de África y en el Noreste de la India (en el parque nacional del Bosque de Gir. Comportamiento: Los leones son el único de los grandes felinos que vive en familias, son animales muy sociables y disfrutan de juegos y cacerías coordinadas entre varias hembras. El macho es el encargado de mantener el territorio, campear y marcarlo para que no entren otras familias de leones a robarles las presas y en época de celo pelear con otros machos para mantener su derecho sobre la manada de hembras. Además cuando un nuevo león consigue a una manada de hembras suele matar a los cachorros del león anterior y las hembras embarazadas suelen abortar (este comportamiento llamado, es para que sean sus propios hijos los que se beneficien de su protección y de la caza de sus hembras. En la evolución: el primer fósil de Panthera data de hace 1, 5 millones de años y es de Tanzania. Las poblaciones africanas han sufrido una pérdida de entre un 30% y un 50% de sus individuos, lo que posiblemente las lleve a la extinción si no se ponen medidas para evitarlo. The last one had been in Late October, warmer and with trees in bloom while this one was in early fall with perfect days of 23C and all the autumn colors in perfect blend with this fantastic course in the middle of the city. The only main change did not happen on the course but under it: it was needed to widen the avenue that runs beside 4th hole and Government said they needed part of the golf hole! But many of the Members here are the most important businessmen in Chile and with their expertise in minery they found a way: they built a subterranean avenue which needed some parts of this fantastic par 5 but after finishing it the hole came back as it was. It is a good story to tell to first timers! The course was in extremely good shape (it hosted the National Fourball Match Play final that same day) greens rolling extremely well, true and fast. And trust me they are a very big challenge, if not sharp with the putter this greens can put you KO in a few holes. We played 2 rounds Friday and Sunday in 2 sunny days (it never rains in Santiago. and then enjoyed that fantastic terrace with maybe the best food in the city (Try "Machas Parmesana" and "Barros Luco" Sandwich. There are many holes which are great, but the run from 10 to 15 is the best part of the course: 10th is a short par 4 but tee shot must be sharp and then green falls strong from back to front, if putting from above the hole it is going to be Formula 1 fast! 11th elevated tee par 3, with views of the city and a challenging distance to judge. - 12th my favourite, flat tee shot and then a short iron to an elevated two platform green, where again putting from abovethe hole can be terrfying. You can even putt it 50yds off the green! 13th is the toughest in the course in my opinion, with a sharp tee shot which you need to cut yes or yes. - 14th the green is 5mts higher than the tee but a short shot could come back 30yds off the green. Back to back par 5s to end the round can bring surprises in your matches, both reachable. Take into account in the altitude of this city ball goes 10% longer. It is extremely private, my club holds a reciprocal agreement and this is why we can come here a couple of times every year. Al hacerlo los leones, la melena, además de estorbar se calienta, aumentando su temperatura y causando mayor gasto energético, lo que es algo incómodo. La melena tampoco ayuda al momento de ocultarse de sus presas. El papel de las leonas es realmente importante ya que se encargan de la caza. De esta forma las leonas alimentan la manada sin olvidar que son las encargadas de cuidar a los cachorros. El hecho de cazar en grupo les da facilidad de cazar animales más grandes, también hay que decir que son precavidos al tratarse de animales muy grandes, por ejemplo, la jirafa, pues pueden resultar heridos durante el combate. Respecto a su hidratación, luego de comer llegan a beber por unos 20 minutos o saciar su necesidad de agua de la humedad de la sangre de sus presas, algo realmente interesante.
